Abstract:<\/p>\n

In this paper, I reconstruct an argument for the claim that religion \u2013 specifically, faith \u2013 provides a central, if not the central, element in the promotion of peace. Drawing on insights found in the writings of the French Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain (1882\u20131973), I argue that, while reason is necessary in building peace, it is not sufficient. What is required is love, a change of heart, a \u2018recasting of reason\u2019 and, fundamentally, faith.<\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/p>\n

Mediatio Unionis<\/em>\u00a0is the title of a book which the Blessed Edward Poppe (1890\u20131924), a young Flemish priest, was planning to write but of which we have only a draft.\u00a0 Poppe wished for the Church to proclaim Mary\u2019s mediation as a new dogma; it seemed particularly relevant to him following so many inhumane acts of the \u201cGreat War.\u201d This, he hoped, would bring about profound spiritual renewal in a world on the way to secularization and dehumanization. Mary\u2019s maternal action is an everpresent concern, but especially in the current context within the Church, and also in the world, where peace among nations and true unity are urgently sought. The article exposes Poppe\u2019s intuition concerning the Virgin Mary\u2019s mediatio, and extends this theological topic by relying on my own recent research in the field of Mariology.<\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/p>\n

The conflict at the borders of our country between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, in which the majority churches in these countries are collaterally involved, draw attention to how they justify their defensive (in the case of Ukraine) and offensive (in the case of the Russian Federation) attitudes. The supporting speeches of the parties include, in addition to historical or ideological motivations, theological and moral ones grounded in the traditional teaching of these Churches, until recently, only one. It is precisely the way in which these Churches engage motivationally in supporting political discourse that leads to a serious distortion of Christian teaching. In this way, the motivational discourse of the Churches circumstantially alters evangelical values by aligning them with political discourse. Through my exposition I try to bring to the forefront the foundation of Christian teaching regarding the source of peace between men and peoples: the self-sacrifice of Jesus Christ that reconciles man to God and men to one another.<\/p>\n

The Responsibility of Love in Gratitude and Trust<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is hard to accept, but there are people who are not able to love. They do not love others and they do not love themselves, whether they have lost their self, as in the case of advanced-stage Alzheimer\u2019s patients, or they have a confused or multiple self, as happens to abandoned children with a long history of institutionalization or those suffering from reactive attachment disorder. The inability to love throws into sharp relief two dimensions of any kind of love: gratitude and trust. Gratitude not only as an act of emotional restitution in respect of a received gift, but also as an act with a dual identity role: that of preserving the identity of those who no longer know who they used to be and who they are, including in their capacity as lovers and loved ones, while also preserving the identity of those who have been taking care of the love journal of which they were a part. And trust, in particular as a re-sponse to a child\u2019s trust in the adult on whom they depend.<\/p>\n

This study intends to explore the relationship between man and divinity from a metaphysical perspective, following the ascending road of the human soul towards God and, afterwards, from a theological descending perspective by analysing the role of divine grace in restoring the wounded relationship. The concepts of\u00a0wound<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0wistfulness<\/em>, extracted from the lexical field of emotions, are analysed more as generating existential seeking and a self-analysis of the spirit that perceives its own itinerary towards meaning, going beyond the absurd born out of the sentiment of human capabilities ever so limited when striving to reach the intangible and to comprehend the incomprehensible. We bring into discussion the feminine language of love in relation to the absolute alterity. We analyse concrete forms of social charity.<\/p>\n
